5/2/08 - Palo Alto, CA - Athletes flock to the Cardinal Invite each year with one goal, to run fast. 2008 was no different. Fields bursting with talent inspired predictions all week. Despite very predictable performances like Shalane Flanagan's new American record in the 10,000, a race that still provided plenty of excitement, the meet also provided surprises such as Brent Vaughn's performance in the men's 5000. Fortunately RunnerSpace was there to capture all of the excitement at Cobb Track.

- Shalane Flanagan sets another American record, this time in her very first 10,000. Flanagan was pushed along to her 30:34 by Kim Smith which provided for excitement as they continued to roll along lap after lap without relenting. Amazing side note: Sally Kipyego broke her own collegiate record during the race (more collegiate highlights of the meet at TrackShark.com).

- Andrew Wheating continues to impress. Less than a week after his outstanding sub-four effort at the Oregon Relays he charged down the homestretch to run 1:47 and win the 800.

- Anna Willard leads a fast women's Steeplechase in which seven women run under the ten minute barrier.

- Emily Brown continues to establish herself. The former Minnesota athlete pulled away from Arianna Lambie to clock a 15:19 5000, to add momentum to her stellar winter cross-country season.

- Craig Mottram decides to make it a race. The pace wasn't as fast as anticipated in the men's 10,000 and never really took off until Mottram put the hammer down with two laps to go and turned what might have been a mediocre race into an exciting effort with his 27:34. The first non-pro in the race was small college sensation Scott Bauhs of Chico State who ran a 27:48!

- Shannon Rowbury rolls away from the 1500 competition. The Duke grad simply ran away from the field the last lap to a 4:07 that was well ahead of second place Yuriko Kobayashi's 4:12. Jordan Hasay ran a very impressive 4:17.46, just off her pr, but still good for the #1 High School time in the Nation (Dyestat.com had a great interview with Hasay after the race).

- (via LetsRun.com) The men's 1500m were a disappointment before they even started with the top section being split into 2 "equal" sections so more people in theory could hit the Olympic "A" standard 3:36.60. The end result was no athletes hitting the "A" standard. In section A2, Nick Symmonds had been in 2nd the entire race (the guy behind the rabbit) and Kevin Sullivan was on his shoulder. Sullivan easily dispatched the field in convincing fashion the final 200, winning by over a second in 3:39.75 as Symmonds held on for second but way back in 3:40.98. Matt Tegenkamp won section A1 in a close race.

- Brent Vaughn gives Kip a run for his money. Although Bernard Lagat looked extremely comfortable in his 13:16 win, with 200m to go Vaughn provided a little doubt as he was rolling up to the hip pocket of Lagat. Vaughn put it all out there and may have established himself as the NCAA favorite in the 5000 with his 13:18.
