U.S. Olympic stars shine in Zurich
Jeremy
Wariner, Sanya Richards, Allyson Felix, Lolo Jones and the men's 4x100m
relay avenged their performances in Beijing Friday by winning their
respective events at the 2008 Weltklasse Zurich, the fifth IAAF Golden
League Meet of the season.
Jeremy Wariner, the
2004 Olympic gold medalist and a two-time World Outdoor champion,
returned to his winning ways in the men's 400m, strong out of the
blocks and powering down the final 100m to finish in a season best
43.82. Reigning Olympic gold medalist LaShawn Merritt was the runner-up
in 44.43. Bronze medalist David Neville was eighth in 46.41.
In
the women's 400 meters, Beijing bronze medalist Sanya Richards was out
quickly and had the lead heading into the final straight, much like she
did in the Olympic final. However, in Zurich, Richards extended her
lead over the final 100m to win in a season best 49.74. 2008 Olympic
4x400m gold medalist Mary Wineberg was fifth in 51.53.
Two-time
Olympic silver medalist and World Outdoor champion Allyson Felix won
the women's 200m in 22.37, holding off 2004 Olympic 100m silver
medalist Lauryn Williams who finished second in 22.68.
2008
World Indoor champion Lolo Jones reaffirmed her position atop the
women's 100m hurdles, winning in Zurich in 12.56. Olympic champion Dawn
Harper finished sixth in 12.73.
With three safe
baton exchanges, the U.S. men's 4x100m relay team of Rodney Martin,
Travis Padgett, Shawn Crawford and Darvis Patton won the final event of
the night in 38.01. Running the anchor leg, Patton held off Olympic
silver medalist Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago whose team
finished second in 38.03.
It was a battle between
Olympic champion Dayron Robles (CUB) and bronze medalist David Oliver
in the men's 110-meter hurdles, as Oliver pushed world record holder
Robles the entire race and finished as the runner-up in 12.98 to
Robles' 12.97. Aries Merritt was fourth in 13.41.
The
men's 100m was once again the Usain Bolt show as the triple Olympic
gold medalist from Jamaica won the event in 9.83. Olympic 100 and 200
bronze medalist Walter Dix was the runner-up in 9.99 and Travis Padgett
was fourth in 10.11.
After a false start and some
stutter-stepping, two-time Olympic gold medalist Angelo Taylor pulled
away for the win in the men's 400m hurdles, crossing the line in 48.07.
Olympic silver medalist and 2007 World champion Kerron Clement was the
runner-up in 48.20.
In field event action, Olympic
silver medalist Jenn Stuczynski took the runner-up position in the
women's pole vault with a clearance of 4.75 meters/15 feet 7 inches.
2005 World Outdoor silver medalist Chaunte Howard was third in the
women's high jump with 1.98m/6-6.
