Towards the end of the New York race, which Radcliffe won  on her comeback to athletics, London Marathon race director Dave Bedford was watching in the media room.

“Do you think it would make a good picture if Paula had the baby given to her at the finish when she wins?” he said. “Would it be a picture that would go around the world?”
