"It's a good way to explore a city by running it," said Lazaroff, 51, who began running in 1991. "The travel and the adventure of seeing a city equals a marathon." On Jan. 13, she plans to run her 100th marathon, the Walt Disney World Marathon in Orlando, Fla.. She aims to have run a marathon in every state by fall 2009. In 1997, she ran a race in Paris that took her past the site where Princess Diana died months earlier. She finished a marathon in Iowa with a 92-degree start temperature, and has run all of the 14 Disney marathons. The office at her home on Franklin Street is lined with a variety of medals neatly displayed in black and red frames, each representing a year of races. Some years, she has run as many as 11, traveling on weekends to cities that interest her. "She just amazes me," said Tracy Spring, 45, of Jackson, who runs with Lazaroff a couple times a week. The two traveled in October to Burlington, Wash., to run the Skagit Flats Marathon on the state's northwest side. "Debbie is a huge motivator for me," said Spring, who has run six marathons. "It is good for myself to look at someone like her and think I can go forward as well." Lazaroff, mother to four adult daughters and grandmother to one, is a health-education coordinator with the Jackson County Intermediate School District.
