By Mary Albl of DyeStat

Lander Valley senior Gage Gose turned in one of the most historic performances in Wyoming state meet history Saturday in Casper when he ran 36.10 seconds to win the Class 3A title in the 300-meter hurdles.

That time is US#4 and he took nearly half a second off of his personal best.

Gose also defended his 110-meter hurdles title with 14.24 seconds.

The Cheyenne Central girls defended their Class 4A state title with 131 points as senior Sydney Morrell collected the distance triple at Harry Geldien Stadium. Morrell won the 3,200 by more than 45 seconds, finishing in 10:37.91. She followed that up with victories in the 1,600 (5:06.97) and 800 (2:14.21).

In the sprints, Sheridan junior Addie Pendergast won the 100 (12.03), 200 (25.19), 400 (54.62) and placed second in the 300 hurdles (43.97). Pendergast is the Wyoming record holder in the 200 and 400.

Cheyenne East junior Taliah Morris won the girls long jump for the third straight year with a leap of 19-8.50, adding another inch to her all-time state best. The previous state meet record was 19-6, held by Gillette's Emily Moore since 2009.

The Natrona County boys secured their first state title since 2015 with 115 points. Senior Jackson Dutcher led the team with wins in the 800 (1:54.08), 1,600 (4:20.96) and was fifth in the 3,200.

Cody senior Luke Talich, who will be a preferred walk-on at Notre Dame this fall for football, claimed the 4A 100 (10.74), 200 (22.10) and long jump (22-11) titles.

Elsewhere in Class 3A, the Powell boys and girls made it a program sweep. Senior Daniel Merritt won the 800 (1:59.01), was runner-up in the 1,600 and fourth in the 3,200 for the boys team.

Rawlins senior Ryann Smith won the 800 (2:15.18), the 1,600 (5:03.54) and was runner-up in the 3,200 (11.33.25).

Big Piney won the 2A girls team title with 127 points. Sophomore Micah Strong led the way with wins in the 100 (12.61) 400 (58.37), 800 (2:22.61) and placed second in the 200 (25.88).

Sophomore Laynee Walker of Kemmerer had a big meet as she won the 100 hurdles (16.76), 300 hurdles (47.21) and also the pole vault with a 10-foot clearance.

Big Piney’s Colby Jenks broke a 2A meet record in the 800 (1:53.64) and was second in both the 400 and 1,600 finals.

Kemmerer’s Owen Burnett came close to the overall state meet record in the 3,200 set in 2015 by Cody’s Brody Smith (9:21.29). Burnett broke the 2A meet record with 9:26.38 to repeat as state champion. He also won the 1,600 for the second time, with a personal best 4:21.28.

The Saratoga girls needed every point in their Class 1A title defense as they scored 110 points to edge out Cokeville (108) and Southeast (106).

Individually, Cokesville junior Brylie Groll placed second in the 400, won the 800 (2:20.22), 1,600 (5:21.44) and 3,200 (11:50.81). Her time in the 3,200 was a meet record, besting the mark of 11:51.11 set by Saratoga’s Shelby Hohnholt in 2008. Teammate Addison Barnes won the high jump (5-3), 100 hurdles (15.59) and 300 hurdles (44.92).

The Burlington boys tallied 155 points to claim the 1A team title as senior Clayton Edwards won the 200 (23.04) and 400 (50.55) and was second in the 100 (11.24).

Cokeville junior Drake Plowman completed the distance triple with wins in the 800 (2:02.91), 1,600 (4:41.61) and 3,200 (10:17.96).
