Jordan Anthony Breaks State Record With 10.30 In 3A 100m Final

The Mississippi State High School State Championships finished off on Thursday, May 6 in record-setting fashion. At the Woody Barrett Track and Field Complex in Pearl, Tylertown’s Jordan Anthony swept the sprints, breaking the state meet record of 10.39 in the 100 with a time of 10.30, and claimed first in the 200 (21.11). He guided his team to a runner-up finish in the 3A race with 123 points, while Senatobia claimed the boys championship with 163 points. Senatobia’s LaJoshua Jackson led the way with a win in the shot put (51 feet) and discus (170-9).

The Senatobia girls made it a program sweep, denying St. Andrew’s a repeat as they scored 102 points to win the 3A title. Saint Andrew’s finished a close second with 96 points. 

It came down to the final event, the 4x400, for the 5A boys team title as Hattiesburg ran to a first-place finish in 3:31.65 to secure the team with 104 points. Brookhaven finished second with  98 points. 

In the distance events, East Central’s Christian Balcer made a great run at the distance state records, as he pulled off an impressive triple, winning the 5A 800 (1:59) 1,600 (4:25.86) and 3,200 (9:19.66). 

Hattiesburg made it a program sweep, as Lenasia Drummond led her team to a 5A state title, claiming the triple jump (36-4.75) and long jump (17-5). 

On the track, Madison Jones of Saltillo made a valiant attempt at Cory McGee’s 4:50.64 1,600-meter record, clocking 4:58.69 to win the 5A crown, as she was the only female to go under five minutes. Long Beach’s Brooklyn Biancamano won the 800 (2:19.01) and 3,200 (11:14.56). 

The Tupelo Christian Prep boys repeated as 1A champs with a dominating 166 points, while the French Camp girls also put up impressive numbers, claiming the team title with 138 points. 

Tupelo Christian’s Khi Holiday won the 100 (10.93), 200 (22.63) and was part of the winning 4x100 (44.87) and runner-up 4x200 (1:34.70).

6A-4A-2A May1-3

Despite a year's wait, the Pearl High boys and Clinton girls track teams picked up right where they left off. The Mississippi State High School State 6A-4A-2A Track and Field Championships resumed at the Woody Barrett Track and Field Complex in Pearl, held May 1-3, after last spring's high school sports were cancelled due to the pandemic. 

The Pear High boys rolled to their third straight 6A outdoor track and field title, scoring 95 points to edge out Clinton (87 points). Jerry Johnson led the way, winning the long jump (23-4.5) and finishing second in the triple (44-10.75). Teammate Leo McIntyre won the shot put with a throw of 55 feet, while Niquez Wade claimed the discus title (161-7) and Corvin Johnson won the 110 hurdles (14.38) for the Pirates. 

The Clinton girls track team collected their eighth 6A title with a dominating effort of 137 points. Clinton won five individual titles as teammates Kaitlyn Walker and Meagan Womack picked up big points in the throws. Walker won the discus title (130-6) and finished third in the shot put (35-5.75), while Womack placed second in the disc (119-4) and shot (36-10.50). 

In 4A action, the Pontotoc boys scored 103 points to win the team championship. Cooper Parmer finished second in the 1,600 (4:42.26) and 3,200 (10:19) for Pontotoc. On the track, Richland’s Makial Musgrove swept the 100 (10.84) and 200 (22.01). In the field events Richland’s Ted Windom claimed the discus (134-7) and shot (51-5.25). 

The battle for the 4A girls team title was close as Raymond edged out Pontotoc, 80-78. Raymond’s Jakia Jonier picked up the win in the triple jump, going (38-6), while teammate Erriona Miller won the 200 in a time of 26.10. 

In the distance events, Mooreville’s Raychel Sanders (5:31.47) and Hannah Sanders (5:31.79) went 1-2 in the 1,600, while Hannah also won the 800 (2:30.47) and Raychel claimed the 3,200 (12:19.35).

In the field events, Sumrall’s Heidi Hudson won the long jump (17-11.75) and high jump (5-2). 

The St. Patrick boys and girls swept the 2A state championships on Saturday. It was the boys’ first title in program history, and fifth for the girls. 

The boys claimed six individual titles as Hunter Loranzo won the disc (137 feet) and shot (48-0.75). 

The St. Patrick girls picked up seven wins as Anna Katherine Thriffiley won the pole vault title in a new state record, clearing 9-10.
