5/17/08 TEMPE, Ariz. – Oregon barely stayed ahead of UCLA early in the day, and then held off hard-charging Arizona State late with a big performance in the 5,000 meters to successfully defend its men’s Pac-10 track and field title Saturday at Joe Sellah Track at Sun Angel Stadium. The Duck women built on steady performances throughout the meet’s second day to claim third place -- their best showing finishing second in 1996. It was the men’s fourth conference title in the last six seasons. Sophomore Andrew Wheating continued his undefeated 2008 season by winning the 800 meters in a personal-best time of 1:46.83. Once again, he used his tremendous kick off the final curve to pass USC’s Duane Solomon and win by nearly a second. His time was the fifth-fastest in school history. After Arizona State crawled within 1.5 points following the men’s triple jump, the final field event, Oregon used a 2-4-5-6-8 finish in the 5,000 meters to rack up 21 points and clinch the meet. Freshman Diego Mercado ran second to Arizona State’s Kyle Alcorn (14:12.76) in a season-best time of 14:17.82. Then the Ducks collected points from senior Carlos Trujillo, Friday night’s winner in the 10,000 meters, in fourth (14:21.78) followed by sophomore A.J. Acosta (14:25.35) and sophomore Kenny Klotz (14:26.15). Junior Scott Wall’s eighth-place finish (14:30.62) rounded out Oregon’s points in the event. The men won with 144.5 points, 10.5 better than Arizona State’s 134. UCLA was third with 108 points, followed by California (81.5), Stanford (79), Washington State (73.5), USC (69.5), Arizona (65) and Washington (63).
