Seven
men who competed in the recent Beijing Olympics are expected on the
starting line of tomorrow's BUPA Great Yorkshire Run 10-K in Sheffield,
England.
"I really can't call the winner in the men's field so
it should be as exciting as the BUPA Great Manchester Run was earlier
this year," said elite athletes manager Andy Caine in an e-mail message
to Race Results Weekly.
The Olympians are Austria's Günther
Weidlinger, who was 27th in the Olympic 10,000m; Spain's Chema Martinez
and Juan Carlos de la Ossa, 16th in the marathon and 17th in the
10,000m; Sweden's Mustafa Mohamed, 10th in the steeplechase; America's
Jorge Torres, 25th in the 10,000m; Morocco's Abdellah Falil, 16th in
the 10,000m; and Britain's Andrew Lemoncello, 10th in heat 2 of the
steeplechase.
"The course is fast," added Caine. "We just need
a bit of long lost summer to return for the guys and girls and we
should see some respectable times."
The women's field is led by
Kenya's Grace Momanyi, who was initially selected for the Olympic team
at 10,000m but was replaced by Peninah Arusei after the Games had
begun; and Americans Amy Rudolph and Sara Slattery.
Last year's
race was won by Kenya's John Kibowen (28:40) and Australia's Benita
Johnson (32:55). Neither athlete appeared on the start list furnised
by Nova International, the event management firm which is organizing
the event.
