Former
York Community High School (Elmhurst, IL) assistant cross country coach
Charlie Kern came to the Super Distance Summit as an accomplished
runner and masters coach. Now in his 40s, he is still quick enough to
pace the mile at the Midwest Distance Gala every June. Charlie was Joe
Newton's right hand man for over a decade and eventually took over as
track coach when Mr Newton retired from coaching in the spring in the
early 2000s.
A second part to Charlie Kern's first Key to Success is that a coach must be able to trust his athletes. A coach can't be there for every of the training but he must trust that the athlete will do what is right when not being watched. He doesn't directly say it but it is clear that a coach's reaction to a breach of trust is equally as important.
